Shades of gray

ANTHONY GLASSMAN

She's new. She's hot. In person, she's truly a thing of beauty. However, there is far more to her than that face. There is the sound that comes out of it when she sings, and the noises she coaxes out of her guitar.

She is Rachel Shortt, and she will be playing at the Winchester in the Cleveland suburb of Lakewood for the release party of her CD In Between Black and White on October 30.

Nine songs of mellifluousness fill the CD, and Shortt has the chops to become the next big thing here. Thankfully, she's getting recognized for it, too, and will be playing shows all over in the coming months. However, going to the CD release party enables the listener to say in years to come, "I saw her back before she hit it big."

The Winchester is located at 12112 Madison Ave, and cover for the show, with special guest Ryann Anderson, is $7. The donation of an item of canned food for St. Herman's lowers cover to $5. The show starts at 9 pm. For more information, call 216-226-5681.

VOTE NO ON ISSUE 1

Ohio shouldn't add discrimination to the Constitution.

The proposed constitutional amendment prohibits marriage for same-sex couples, and would be the first in Ohio's history to strip away civil rights and liberties. It makes LGBT people and unmarried couples second-class citizens.

Issue 1 would forever ban marriage and civil unions for same-sex couples-denying rights to people who work hard, pay taxes, and contribute to our communities.

Issue 1 makes employers, who offer fair benefits to same-sex couples, the target of litigation.

Issue 1 could overturn existing legal recognition of domestic partnerships.

Ohio's future depends on the defeat of Issue 1. Ohio's economy depends on the defeat of Issue 1. Stop the extremists from destroying Ohiovote NO on Issue 1.
